The famous actor David Soul, most recognized for playing Detective Kenneth “Hutch” Hutchinson on the 1970s TV show Starsky & Hutch, David Soul Passes Away at 80 years old.
His wife, Helen Snell, announced that he died on Thursday, surrounded by his loving family. She said he was gifted in many areas, including acting, singing, storytelling, and art, and he touched many lives with his smile, laughter, and passion.
Starsky & Hutch’s David
Soul was best known for starring as Hutch, alongside Paul Michael Glaser as Starsky, in the iconic buddy cop show Starsky & Hutch from 1975-1979. He later reprised the role with Glaser in the 2004 movie remake, starring Ben Stiller as Starsky and Owen Wilson as Hutch. Stiller honored Soul’s passing by reposting a clip from the original show on X (formerly Twitter) and calling him the epitome of “70’s cool.”
In addition to Starsky & Hutch, Soul had roles in shows like Here Come The Brides, Magnum Force, The Yellow Rose, and Salem’s Lot. Horror author Stephen King, who wrote the Salem’s Lot novel, expressed sadness at Soul’s passing. Soul also appeared in some British TV like Holby City, Little Britain, and Lewis. In 2004 he became a British citizen. However, he declined lucrative offers to be on reality TV, believing celebrity was overvalued.
The singer-actor, married five times, was arrested in the 1980s for assaulting his pregnant wife Patti Carnel Sherman. It was his first offense, and charges were dropped after he completed a probation program. He later expressed regret and visited prisons to speak against domestic violence.
David’s Childhood
Born David Solberg in 1943 in Chicago, he spent childhood in South Dakota and postwar Berlin, where his professor father worked for the U.S. high commission. Before acting, he was a folk singer, opening for bands like the Byrds. He learned music as a teen in Mexico, where radical students gave him a guitar and taught him indigenous songs. Performing those songs masked in Minneapolis led to some success, but bookings dropped when he unmasked, leading him to acting.
He got roles in shows like Star Trek and films like Magnum Force in the 60s/70s. His role in Magnum Force as Officer John Davis led to his big break as Hutch in Starsky & Hutch. Riding the TV show’s popularity, he released several soft rock albums in the late 1970s, including two UK chart-topping singles. But his music career slowed after his arrest. He only released one more album, 1997’s self-released Leave a Light On.
Soul was married five times and had six children. He said his last wife, Helen Snell, whom he met doing PR for a play he was in, was his “soulmate.”
