A highly recognizable NFL star from his era is about to become available as a free agent once more. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Pittsburgh Steelers have decided to cut Pro Bowl cornerback and potential Hall of Famer Patrick Peterson. The Steelers will avoid paying the salary cap by a substantial $6.85 million thanks to this move.

After spending time with the Minnesota Vikings, Patrick Peterson signed a two-year, $14 million contract to join the Steelers last year. But he wasn’t up to par with Pittsburgh’s defense, and that, along with his big salary, meant he would eventually have to leave the organization. Peterson finished the previous season with 17 appearances for the Steelers, 2 interceptions, 11 pass defenses, and 42 combined tackles. Even with these figures, sophisticated statistics showed a less satisfactory result.

Pro Football Reference reports that Peterson gave up four touchdowns in coverage, a 91.5 opponent passer rating, and a 59.4 completion % when targeted. Peterson’s position on the squad was further diminished by the arrival of rookie Joey Porter Jr., the son of former Steelers standout Joey Porter. In his limited role, Porter Jr. had a strong rookie campaign and is anticipated to take over as the Steelers’ starting cornerback in 2024.

Because of his leadership abilities and depth of experience, other teams are probably going to show a lot of interest in signing Peterson once he is free. In 201 NFL games over his career, he has accumulated 36 interceptions and 122 pass defenses.

As he was being released from the Steelers, Peterson said, “I’m grateful for the opportunity to have played for such a storied franchise like the Steelers.” I did my best, and I have the utmost regard for the company.” With the words, “I’m looking forward to the next chapter in my career and am excited to bring my skills and leadership to a new team,” he also expressed his desire to keep making significant contributions.

There is excitement about which team will target Peterson as the NFL free agency era draws near. His experienced presence and established record make him a desirable addition to any team looking to strengthen their secondary. Football fans will surely be interested in learning Peterson’s next destination as the 2017 season approaches.
